Stefan Körzell was born in 1963 and began his professional career with an apprenticeship as a machine fitter at Rotenburger Metallwerke (RMW) in Rotenburg/Fulda.
In 1980 he joined IG Metall at the age of 17 and successfully fought as a youth representative for the employment of all trainees at Rotenburger Metallwerke. During the dispute over the introduction of the 35-hour week, Körzell was a member of the company and local strike management. Until 1990, Körzell worked at Metallwerke, most recently as a shift leader. During this time, he already filled several honorary positions for the DGB and IG Metall.
In 1990 he became DGB organisation secretary in Fulda and in 1991 in the district of Hersfeld-Rotenburg. In 1997 he was elected chairman of the DGB district Bad Hersfeld-Eschwege.
On 2 February 2002 Stefan Körzell was elected chairman of the DGB Hessen and chairman of the DGB Hessen-Thüringen district. He was re-elected with a large majority in 2006 and 2010. Since 2002, Körzell has also been a member of the DGB Federal Executive Committee as district chairman.
On 12 May 2014, the delegates of the 20th Ordinary DGB Federal Congress elected Stefan Körzell to the DGB Federal Executive Committee. In 2018 he was confirmed in this office at the 21st Ordinary Federal Congress.
